Metro Police said a twelve-year-old boy used a basketball to defend himself against a woman wielding a knife during an attempted robbery in East Nashville on Sunday.

According to a Metro Police affidavit, 31-year-old Ruby Nations admitted to smoking crack before approaching a group of children near a playground at the CWA apartment complex along South 5th Street.

Police said Nations demanded money from the twelve-year-old child. The boy reportedly denied her, at which point, she pretended to pull out a knife.

When the child denied Nations a second time, police said she pulled a black and silver kitchen knife out of her pants.

The child then threw a basketball at her face and ran to his mother.

Nations went to a nearby building and hid the knife.

Police arrived on scene and the suspect was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Nations is charged with aggravated robbery, criminal trespassing and public intoxication.
