A man wanted for several crimes is accused of hitting a police officer in the face with a wire rack as he was trying to arrest him.

This happened at the Family Dollar on Shelby Avenue on Friday afternoon.

According to his arrest affidavit, Joseph Street, Jr., who was wanted on seven outstanding warrants, was seen by Metro Police officers going into the store. Officers reportedly followed him inside.

Police say Street ran after spotting them but one officer was able to catch up and grabbed him by the jacket. That’s when officers say Street grabbed a wire food rack and swung it at the officer, hitting him in the face and hand.

Street was able to break free, according to the affidavit, but a second officer deployed his taser, hit Street and took him into custody.

Police say Street was searched and had some marijuana in his pocket.

The officer who was hit has cuts on his eye and hand.

In addition to the outstanding warrants, Street is charged with assault on an officer.
