The inmate who escaped Cheatham County authorities while on trash duty Thursday turned himself in on Friday afternoon, according to Sheriff Mike Breedlove.

Deputies said Greg Taylor was assigned to the trash pick-up crew when he jumped in the driver’s seat of a county truck and sped off. The truck was found abandoned at the end of King’s Terrace off Valley View Drive.

The Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office says Taylor fled into the woods. The manhunt for him was suspended after hours of searching.

US Marshals were called in to assist with the search on Friday morning. However, Taylor made it easy for them — turning himself into authorities near Highway 41 and Old Hickory Boulevard on Friday afternoon.

Taylor reportedly told the police, “it’s one of the stupidest things I have ever done.”

Taylor was in jail for on a misdemeanor sentence for failure to pay child support and was expected to be released early.

Warrants have been drawn up charging him with felony counts of aggravated assault on an officer, escape and auto theft. He will soon be booked and arraigned on those charges.
