106 vehicles stolen in Nashville in one week; teens shown on video stealing truck

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) - In just one week, 106 vehicles were stolen across Davidson County. One of those thefts was caught on camera.
Russ and Leona Shinert woke up last Sunday morning and saw that Russ's work truck was gone. They quickly checked their home surveillance cameras.
The couple decorates their front yard for every holiday. Even though their children are grown, they decorate to delight the neighborhood kids.
That's why they said what they saw on the video is "heartbreaking".
"It took a big chunk out of me to see a young teenager that would be doing something like that," said Russ Shinert.
In the video, you can see a car driving down John Hagar Road in Hermitage. It slows down then stops in front of the Shinert's home.
At least two teens get out and begin walking around. They then head for Russ Shinert's work truck.
Twenty seconds after at least two teens are seen getting into the truck, the teens and the truck are gone.
Metro Police found the truck two days later on Dellway Villa Drive in East Nashville. The truck had a bullet holes, a flat tire, a ski-mask and stolen credit card inside.
"These kids scare you so bad," said Russ's wife Leona Shinert. "They don't just take the things you work hard for, but they hurt you emotionally and that's what hurts."
The Shinerts hope the truck can be repaired but their sense of safety will take much longer to heal.
"I feel violated, scared, mad, irritated. These kids don't understand what they do to us," said Mrs. Shinert.
The Shinert's truck was stolen on October 14. Metro Police report that from October 12-19, 106 vehicles were stolen across Davidson County. That's about 15 cars a day.
The same night the Shinert's truck was taken, a homeowner in Antioch caught a group of teens on his surveillance cameras burglarizing vehicles.
Josh Watkins posted the video on Facebook to warn other people to lock their car doors and bring in their valuables and car keys.
The video shows a car pulling up in the Hickory Estates neighborhood. Four teens get out of the car, spread out, and start pulling on door handles.
When a car is open, a teen is spotted going through it to see what he can find.
