MT. JULIET, Tenn. (WKRN) -- Barbara Gordon says she's pretty savvy when it comes to scams but the voicemail she got last week could've fooled anyone.
"This one was really good," Gordon said. "I almost fell for it. Literally, for a little bit, I was scared."
She adds, "This was very sophisticated."
She got a voicemail on May 9th from someone who claimed he was a courier with a company called Statewide Processing.
The caller said he was trying to serve her court papers.
The company had her name, address, cell phone number, and a file number for her case.
In the message, she was instructed to call a law firm about a debt she allegedly owed to Citibank for $33,000.
"It was so upsetting," Gordon said. "I thought I might have to file bankruptcy cause this is $33,000. I'll be paying forever."
She called the law firm named Goldstein and Weiss.
The person she spoke with gave her a court date and threatened to take her house and other assets.
The next day, they called back and offered a settlement.
Gordon called it a "scam" and asked for written proof of her debt.
"He hung up on me," Gordon said.
The Wilson County Sheriff's Office is investigating and says debt collection scams are common.
"It's not about intellect whatsoever," she said. "These people prey on people."
News 2 looked up Statewide Processing on the Better Business Bureau Scam Tracker site.
Ten complaints have been filed against them since last year with similar scams.
"I am shocked that they put that much energy into this," she said.
Gordon is grateful she never sent money and says if you get a call, ask for written proof.
"If it can happen to me, other people need to be aware," Gordon said.
News 2 called the phone numbers associated with Statewide Processing and Goldstein and Weiss for comment.
None of the calls have been returned.
