As holiday season rolls around, sheriff warns citizens of phone scams

STEWART COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) - The Stewart County Sheriff's Office is warning Tennesseans about scams that are popping back up.

The sheriff's office said residents may receive a call saying that a relative has been in a car accident and is in jail in another state requesting bail money.

Deputies said the caller will even have the name of the resident's family member or pretend to be the family member.

Police said the scam is often directed at older or elderly people.

Other scams include warrants about family members, money owed to the IRS, and prizes that have been won.

The sheriff's office advised residents to never send money based on phone call requests and to contact the sheriff's office on any calls that request money before considering sending the money.
