There were some tense moments at a Maury County church Sunday after a man was arrested outside.
Witnesses at the Bethel Church of Christ in Culleoka noticed a man leaving the church right as the sermon was starting. One observer thought it was odd.
So when David Lewis went to his car, Giles County Deputy Mike Thomason went outside to check on him.
Thomason thought he saw a gun in Lewis’ car. He called the Sheriff’s Department dispatch office and was told that Lewis was wanted out of Marshall County for theft.
Thomason called for backup after he spotted Lewis pulling something long out of his car trunk.
Lewis was arrested a short time later.
Police say the firearm in the car was a pellet pistol. They found a long sword and knives in the trunk.
The church was put on lockdown for a short time. But no one was hurt and the church service ended without any further incident.
