The sport of boxing doesn’t always get a ton of recognition in Middle Tennessee, but a new local champion is certainly putting it in the spotlight.
On January 13th, Ashland City’s own Caleb Plant became the IBF Super Middleweight Champion for the first time in his boxing career.
Then less than three weeks later, Cheatham County residents came out to celebrate his incredible accomplishment with a first-class celebration. January 31 was officially “Caleb Plant Day” in the county.
Boxer Caleb Plant said, “I wasn’t expecting this turnout, I just wanted them to know I’m not the only one. There are a lot of talented people here and where I’m from and I hope to show that it can be done.”
Besides getting the proclamation, the county is in the process of making Plant’s journey and world title an official part of Tennessee history.
“I wasn’t expecting that and never thought of it like that, so for them to say that and they’re working on it it’s an honor for me. I’m proud of where I’m from,” added Plant.
After making appearances this weekend, the work begins again as Plant works to defend his title.
Plant told the media on Thursday, he’s working on getting a fight in either July or August, and he hopes it will happen at a venue in downtown Nashville.
