Benny the dog disappears for months, turns up hundreds of miles from home

A dog that disappeared on moving day at Fort Campbell is back with his family. He was missing for 5 months and somehow made it to Michigan.  No one knows how!

Benny is a lab mix, almost 3 years old. He belongs to Gabby McAndrew and her husband.

While they were packing up for a move to Modesto, California, Benny got loose.

Gabby says, “One of the movers either left the door open or the side gate open and Benny was gone.”

She was heartbroken, but never gave up hope.

Gabby turned to Facebook recently and typed in Benny the Dog.  Her search brought her to the Bay County Animal Control page.  They’re located 100 miles north of Detroit, Michigan.  Benny was featured in a weekly spotlight and up for adoption.

“I cried,” said Gabby. “I couldn’t believe it because I thought he was dead”

A police officer had picked up Benny and thought he was a stray.

“Then to be notified by a family in California that we have their dog, was really a shock to all of us,” said Mike Halstead at Bay County Animal Control.

Benny was microchipped but his address was listed at Fort Campbell, Ky, not California.

How he made it to Michigan is still a mystery.

Gabby said, “I’m baffled to tell you the truth, because I’m like how the heck did he even get there?”

What she does know is that her best friend is back.
