Officials confirmed the execution of David Earl Miller was carried out Thursday.  

Miller was executed by electric chair and was pronounced dead at 7:25 p.m. 

Witnesses reported that Miller was asked what his last words were. His initial words couldn’t be made out and when he was asked to repeat himself he said, ” Beats being on death row.” 

Witnesses also described Miller as emotionless throughout the process. 

Miller was served his last meal earlier in the day, which consisted of Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes, biscuits, and coffee. 

Last month, Miller chose to be put to death in the electric chair after a lower court ruled against his claim that Tennessee’s lethal injection protocol causes a prolonged, torturous death. 

The U.S. Supreme Court denied a Stay of Execution for Miller just a few hours before the execution happened.  

Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally released a statement regarding the execution. 

In the state of Tennessee, we reserve the ultimate and irrevocable penalty of death only for the most heinous of crimes. Lee Standifer was a special needs woman living a full and productive life. That life was taken in a cruel, savage and torturous fashion by the individual put to death tonight. Justice, long delayed, has now been served. It is my solemn hope the family of Lee Standifer can now be at peace.
 

Miller, who was on death row for 36 years, was sentenced to death for the 1981 murder of 23-year-old Lee Standifer in Knoxville. His tenure on death row was the longest.  

He is the second Tennessee death row inmate to be executed in as many months. Edmund Zagorski was executed by electric chair on Nov. 1.
