25-year-old man arrested for rape of woman in Edgehill

A 25-year-old man has been arrested and charged in the sexual assault of a woman in Edgehill.

Metro police reported Devon Gooden was taken into custody Wednesday night for the attack on a 22-year-old woman at the Note 16 apartments on Horton Avenue. He was arrested at his residence on 11th Avenue South, according to Metro police.

Gooden is also charged in three robbery cases against separate women in their 20s across Nashville.

Officers arrested Gooden while serving an outstanding warrant charging him with an attempted robbery of a woman at her 8th Avenue South apartment on Jan. 27.

During an interview with detectives, Gooden reportedly implicated himself in the rape of the woman in Edgehill and theft of her vehicle.

Additionally, Gooden is charged with the Jan. 27robbery of a 21-year-old woman on Elliott Avenue and the Feb. 10 armed robbery of a 23-year-old woman at her Grand Avenue apartment building, according to Metro police.

According to police, the rape victim had just arrived in the parking garage of Note 16 Apartments on Horton Avenue just after 11 p.m. on Feb. 21. Police said she saw the suspect sitting on a curb just outside the entrance gate.

Officers said the suspect, now identified as Gooden, followed her car into the garage and confronted her as she walked to the elevators. He then put his hand over her mouth and forced her into the elevator, where he repeatedly sexually assaulted her, according to Metro police.

The man also robbed her of her cash and her car keys, police say.

Investigators say the man then fled from the garage in the victim’s car, which was found in the parking lot of the Edgehill Library on 12th Avenue South.

A police dog attempted to track the suspect from there but did not locate him, according to Metro police.

After the assault, the victim knocked on the door of another resident at the apartment complex and stayed there until officers arrived.

The investigation to this point shows that the rapist was hanging around the parking garage entrance for about an hour prior to the victim’s arrival, likely waiting for a vulnerable target, according to Metro police.
