Customs agents in the Philippines made a disturbing discovery on Sunday, 1,529 live exotic turtles hidden in luggage at an airport.

Customs officials say the turtles were inside four pieces of luggage that were abandoned at the airport by a passenger that had arrived at the airport from Hong Kong. Customs officials believe the passenger learned about the stiff penalties for possessing illegal wildlife and abandoned the turtles.

Each turtle was partially covered with duct tape to keep its legs in place.

Officials say star tortoises, redfoot tortoises, sulcata tortoises, and red-eared sliders were found in the luggage. The exotic turtles have a street value of $4.5 million in the Philippines.

Customs agents in the Philippines have confiscated many other critters at airports including 250 geckos, 254 coral snakes and 63 iguanas, and chameleon and bearded dragons.
