A 12-year-old girl was shot protecting several other young children in her Texas apartment Friday night, police say.
According to the Houston Police Department, two men knocked on the apartment door around 8:30 p.m. and asked for an adult. None were home at the time.
The girl then rounded up several other children between the ages of four and 10 who were in the apartment and put them in a back room.
Police say the men walked to the courtyard of the apartment complex and fired at least four shots into the apartment. One of the bullets went through a wall and hit the girl in the abdomen.
“So the 12-year-old was scared because she was in there by herself with her siblings and that’s why she took shelter in the other bedroom. And unfortunately, she was struck by a round,” Assistant Police Chief Bobby Dobbins said.
Dobbins told reporters during a news conference the girl was in stable condition after the shooting.
“Obviously, our prayers are with her and with her family. And once again as the chief and the mayor constantly talk about and we talk about nightly and daily, these are our children, they’re children for all the city,” he said. “And these are our children being harmed by random shootings for people that have no regard for life and have no regard for order. And this poor child was a victim of that tonight.”
The other children are staying in the apartment and being cared for by their grandmother.
Authorities do not have a description of the men responsible for the shooting.
