Twelve people escaped a fire at a home in East Nashville early Thursday morning.
The fire began around 4:30 a.m. at a home on Bethwood Drive.
A resident told News 2 his wife woke him up after she smelled smoke and he saw flames shooting through a light fixture in their ceiling.
He was able to help 11 other people inside the home escape to safety, including at least five children between two and 15 years old. He ran out of the home with only the clothes on his back and two mismatched shoes.
It took firefighters nearly 30 minutes to get the fire under control and the home partially collapsed during the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but the resident believes it was electrical in nature and began in the attic.
The family has lived in the home for about a year.
