LEBANON, Tenn. (WKRN) – A 10-year-old boy found a weapon Friday and accidentally shot himself in the stomach.

It happened at a home in the 300 block of Dandelion Drive in Lebanon.

The boy’s 11-year-old old brother called 911 at 4:16 p.m., according to the Lebanon Police Department.

“It was great that he did that,” said Cpl. P.J. Hardy. “That lesson’s been learned, but we may need to revisit gun safety in the future.”

The boy was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center by ambulance because LifeFlight had to be grounded due to weather conditions.

He remains in stable condition, but police say he will undergo several surgeries and procedures.

Lebanon police told News 2 Sunday the boy was taken off his breathing tube and doctors are encouraged with his prognosis.

“We’re praying for them,” said neighbor Jeff Herndon. “My little boy goes up there and spends the night a bunch. It kind of scares me because I didn’t know they had a rifle.”

Officials told News 2 the parents were not home at the time of the incident, and this is not a criminal investigation.

According to Safe Tennessee Project, this is the eighth child in Tennessee this year to be injured or killed by accessing a loaded gun.
