NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — One person was killed in a crash Wednesday morning along Interstate 24 in South Nashville.

Multiple agencies responded around 1:30 a.m. to I-24 eastbound at the 55-mile marker, between Harding Place and Briley Parkway, for a crash involving a semi and a Dodge Dart. The man killed was identified as 31-year-old Sylvester L. McCaulley III of Smyrna.

According to police, McCaulley was stopped on the left shoulder of the interstate. Prior to the collision, he accelerated and turned the Dart to the right so that it was nearly perpendicular to the flow of traffic. The driver of the tractor-trailer, 56-year-old Gregory Mathes, was unable to avoid the crash.

McCaulley died at the scene. Mathes was treated at Southern Hills Medical Center and released.

A toxicology report is being conducted by the Medical Examiner.
