A driver was killed and her passenger seriously injured Wednesday morning in a crash during a pursuit with law enforcement in the southern part of Wayne County.
The crash was reported around 1:15 a.m. on Big Cypress Road at Natchez Trace Parkway in the area of Collinwood.
According to a crash report released by Tennessee Highway Patrol, Alisha Risner was driving a car that was being pursued by at least one deputy with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
As the pursuit traveled southbound on Big Cypress Road, deputies said Risner’s car went off the road and hit a ditch and culvert, then flipped several times and slammed into a utility pole.
Both Risner and her 28-year-old female passenger were thrown from the vehicle.
Risner, a 31-year-old from Collinwood, was pronounced dead. She was not wearing a seatbelt, investigators said.
Her passenger, a Waynesboro woman, was injured in the crash, and authorities said she was airlifted to a hospital from the scene to receive medical treatment.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reported a deputy pursued the car after noticing a violation and as the driver tried to get away, the car crashed about three miles from where it was initially spotted.
In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, the Sheriff’s Office said: “The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the accident and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is cooperating fully with the investigation. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is asking everyone to keep all involved in their thoughts and prayers.”
