Employee dies after being shot in head at South Nashville market

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Metro police are investigating after an employee was fatally wounded in a shooting Thursday night at a South Nashville market.

Officers responded around 5:30 p.m. to the Newroz Market on Elysian Fields Court where they said they located a male near the rear door of the business with a gunshot wound to the head.

The shooting victim, identified by police as Nashwan Malaka, was pronounced dead at the scene, investigators revealed.

According to police, the 32-year-old was working in the meat department in the back of the business, when a man entered an unlocked back door, ran up behind Malaka and fired. The gunman, wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans and brown shoes, then fled through the same back door.

Metro police released surveillance images of the gunman Friday morning, describing the shooting as “targeted.”
