MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

An 11-year-old girl has died after she was struck by a car driven by a Rutherford County sheriff's deputy.

The deputy, Detective Sgt. Ron Killings, a 12-year veteran of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office, has since been placed on routine administrative leave.

Detectives believe the girl, Lakeisha White, darted out into Bradyville Pike when she was struck just before 9 p.m. Thursday.

Sgt. Killings was on routine patrol and deputies believe he never saw her.

White was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead just after 12 Midnight.

Details of the crash are still under investigation.

Detectives said there is no indication alcohol was a factor although a blood sample from Killings was taken per standard procedure.

The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said Sgt. Killings has two young daughters and is understandably devastated by the accident.

White was from Hopkinsville, Kentucky and visiting her grandmother for the summer when the incident occurred.
