A dog was found in a hot van parked outside a Murfreesboro Walmart Sunday afternoon.
Police responded to the store on Old Fort Parkway around 3:30 p.m. to find the dog lying on the floorboard panting heavily.
In addition, the dog had no water and was “very hot to the touch,” according to the incident report.
The report stated the dog was so hot the metal buckle of the animal's collar burned the hand of a responding officer.
Surveillance cameras from the store showed the van was in the parking lot for at least an hour.
The outside temperature was 91 degrees.
The dog's owner returned to the van shortly after officers arrived.
Murfreesboro police spokesperson Kyle Evans told News 2 the investigation was turned over to PAWS, Rutherford County's pet adoption and welfare services.
News 2 has learned no charges were filed and the dog is back with its owner.
