THOMASTON, Ala. -

A family in Alabama set a record on Saturday by capturing and killing the biggest alligator in the state.

According to ABC News, it took 10 hours to capture the 15 foot, 1,011.5 pound alligator in Thomaston.

The alligator was so big biologists at Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries reportedly had to use a backhoe to lift the reptile onto the scale after it destroyed the winch usually used to lift alligators.

The gator's weight made it the largest ever killed in the state of Alabama, according to ABC News.
