Mother uses text messages to convince thief to return stolen van

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -

A single mother of five sent text messages to a thief to convince him to return her stolen van.

Megan Bratten told WJLA her van was stolen earlier this week while she was shopping in K-Mart.

Bratten remembered that her cell phone was in the van, so she sent a text message to her number, pleading for the van to be returned.

To her surprise, the thief messaged her back with step by step instructions on where to find the van.

When Bratten retrieved her vehicle, there was a note inside that read: “I do feel bad, my kids needed a meal on the table so that's what their dad did. I know it's wrong, but it's been so hard since I lost my job."

Bratten decided not to contact police before her van was returned.

She said all that matters is that the thief did the right thing.
