NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A 16-year-old student at Cane Ridge High School died Thursday after falling from the hood of a moving vehicle earlier this week.

Haljuer Hassan suffered a serious head injury after authorities say he jumped onto the hood of a Honda Civic Monday as it was driving through the high school's parking lot.

The driver of the car, a 17-year-old, applied the brakes. Police said Hassan then got off the hood, lost his balance and fell, hitting his head on the ground.

The driver then left the parking lot.

Hassan was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with critical injuries. He was removed from life support Thursday and passed away.

“I was in class when I heard he passed away and like I got this really heavy feeling in my chest and I just couldn't think straight,” said Jason Haigler, a sophomore at Cane Ridge High School.

He met Hassan Freshman year and the two instantly clicked.

“He was in all my classes so we started getting closer as the school year passed and I knew him really well, good friend,” said Haigler.

“He was a good kid he was always funny he always knew how to make me laugh,” he continued.

Haigler didn't see what happened Monday.

“I miss Haljuer,” said Haigler.

"We are very saddened by the tragic death of a student at Cane Ridge HS. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the Cane Ridge community," Metro Schools said on Twitter.

Police said the driver of the Honda Civic told them he fled the parking lot because others were telling him to do so.

Authorities are working to gather more information. The investigation is ongoing.

No charges have been filed at this time.

Grief counselors will be available to students as needed.
