NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Local racing expert and retired sports writer for the Tennessean Larry Woody has spoken out on the crash involving Tony Stewart that resulted in the death of young fellow racer Kevin Ward Jr.

Woody stated he believes Stewart did not crash into Ward intentionally, rather he might have been trying to send a message.

As a result of the fatal accident, Woody believes NASCAR will ban drivers from getting out of their cars on the track to confront other drivers after crashes.

Woody also relates the Stewart crash to the controversy surrounding the death of racing legend Dale Earnhardt who was killed when local racing driver Sterling Marlin bumped into his car.

At the time, some fans blamed Marlin for the fatal accident similarly to how Stewart is taking the blame for the death of Ward.

“Tony’s doing the right thing by staying quiet, staying out of it, kind of let passions subside, cool down, but at some point he’ll have to address it,” said Woody, adding that it might be best if Stewart sat out the rest of the racing season out of respect for Ward.

Ward was killed on August 11 after he was struck by Stewart’s car as he was walking on the track to confront Stewart after he clipped Ward’s car and spun him into a fence.
