BAXTER, Tenn. - Friends and family of Courtney Cash, who was murdered last March, gathered Monday in Cookeville to remember her life and make a statement.

On what would have been Cash’s 24th birthday, loved ones released balloons and looked to heaven in her memory.

“This is an unexpected, horrible tragedy that no family should have to go through,” said her sister, Cara Cash.

In March, Cash was stabbed multiple times before being stuffed inside a box during a brutal attack inside her Baxter, Tennessee, home, about 100 miles east of Nashville.

“We need people to know she laid [sic] in the box for 24 hours,” her friend, Rachel Dixon, told News 2.

“Nobody deserves to die in that fashion,” said another friend, Tammy Hoag.

Cash’s boyfriend, Austin Johnson, was also injured during the attack, but was able to escape with the couple’s young daughter, who was unharmed.

Wayne Masciarella was charged with first degree murder in the case.

As friends and family wait for justice, they also remember the young woman who touched their lives and how, today, would have been a day of celebration.

“For the 23 and a half years your mom had, you were light of her life,” Hoag said. “We miss you. Everybody miss you.”

Masciarella is being held in the Putnam County jail without bond. His next court date is for November.
