Wilson County students return to school; Police urge caution

MT. JULIET, Tenn. -

Police have doubled patrol units as students and teachers head back to class in Wilson County Friday.

Police in Mt. Juliet will heavily monitor morning and afternoon traffic as students arrive and depart from school.

According to Lt. Tyler Chandler with the Mt. Juliet Police Department, there will be several undercover police cars patrolling near school zones as well.

"They're looking for anyone who is speeding, texting, and not abiding to school bus arm laws," Chandler said. "We don't want to write tickets. Our goal is to remind drivers about our active presence to keep students safe."

Last August, the police department wrote an average of 55 school zone related tickets per week.

The minimum fine for speeding in a school zone is $164.

Dickson and Hickman County students also return to the classroom Friday.
