HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. -

A nurse faces a charge of animal abuse after Hernando County Sheriff's deputies say she left her dog locked in a hot car outside the hospital where she worked.

The temperature inside the car was 120 degrees, according to an animal service officer, who measured the temperature using a special thermometer.

Someone had called 911 saying there was an animal in distress in the parking lot of Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville. The caller said the dog had been in the car for over an hour and was panting excessively and foaming at the mouth.

Deputies and animal services officers responded at about 12:20 p.m. on Thursday. They smashed the window of the Toyota Camry to rescue the dog.

The dog was unable to stand on its own after it was removed from the car. It was given water to drink and ice was placed on its paws in order to cool it down. The animal services officer took the dog to a local veterinarian for emergency treatment.

Deputies say Hurline Saint-Fleur, 45, who is a nurse practitioner at Oak Hill Hospital is the owner of the car and the dog.

Deputies found her inside the hospital. She was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals. Saint-Fleur was booked into the Hernando County Detention Center with bond set at $1,000.

Authorities have not released information about the dog's condition. The dog was described as a 35-to-40 pound, mixed breed.
