Nashville group returns from Israel just before planes grounded

All U.S. flights to and from Israel are still grounded. The move comes after a rocket hit near the airport in Tel Aviv.

Israel and Hamas are fighting for the third time in just over five years. One group from Nashville got out of the area just in time.

They arrived back home from Israel around 4 p.m. Tuesday morning. The group is with the Jewish Federation of Nashville and was there for work.

Mark Freedman, the Executive Director, describes what it was like to be there.

“It was July 12 and I was at dinner in Tel Aviv. It was around nine o’clock in the evening when the sirens went off and I believe in the space of a half hour the sirens went off two times and both times headed for shelter,” said Freedman.

He explained that the group had to go to the shelters six times since July 12.

“It’s obviously disruptive. No one wants to be injured in a missile attack,” Freedman said. “It does put people, including myself, on edge.”

There will be a solidarity rally on Wednesday night at the Gordon Jewish Community Center located at 801 Percy Warner Boulevard in Nashville.

It starts at 6 p.m. and is open to the public.
