Charges pending against Rogersville man who fell off cliff during Walmart theft getaway

KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) -

Kingsport Police say a man who stole from a local Walmart and fell off a cliff during his getaway will soon face criminal charges.

Police say around 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, dispatch got a call that someone had stolen from the Walmart on Fort Henry Drive.

According to Police, 43-year-old Darrell Eugene Helton of Rogersville had stolen enough merchandise to warrant felony charges.

Walmart employees told Police Helton ran into the woods near the intersection of Fort Henry Drive and John B. Dennis Highway.

A perimeter was set up to catch Helton.

Around 4 p.m., Officers say they found Helton lying on the ground near a cliff approximately 50 feet high.

Helton told police he fell off the cliff while he was trying to get away.

He was taken to the Holston Valley Medical Center for what Police call "significant injuries".

Kingsport Police say Helton will face criminal charges.
