Customer records gas pump overcharging him in Green Hills

A Nashville resident used his cell phone to capture evidence that a Green Hills gas pump was overcharging him.

Had the problem not been caught, it could have continued to charge more to thousands of other customers.

On his lunch break Wednesday, Joshua Sizemore was filling up his tank at the Shell station on Hillsboro Pike when he noticed something strange.

After the automatic pump lever was disengaged, the price continued to slowly go up.

Sizemore grabbed his cell phone and recorded more than 30 seconds of the price creeping up an extra five cents.

The video also showed the gas pump handle, which appeared to be released. Then he removed the nozzle and returned it to the pump.

Sizemore went inside and showed his video to the store manager, who apologized and reimbursed him for the eight cents extra he was charged.

A spokesman for the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, which regulates fuel pumps in the state, says although it doesn’t happen often, it’s not unheard of for a fuel pump to charge the wrong price.

As recently as May 21, 2014, an inspector went to that Shell location for a routine check. It was found that one of the pumps was still advancing on price after the handle was released.

The station was ordered to have the pump fixed by a state-licensed repairman.

Sizemore said he’s glad he noticed the problem, and says people should pay attention at the pump.

“We’re already getting robbed at the pump,” said Sizemore. “There’s no reason to also get hosed at the hose.”

Customers who suspect irregularities regarding fuel pumps in Tennessee can report the issue to the Department of Agriculture by calling 1-800-OCTANE1.
