McConnell weighs in on border crisis

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says he has a solution to deal with the thousands of unaccompanied minors flocking to the U.S. border. The Kentucky Republican said Friday the child immigrants should be treated humanely and sent back immediately.

Unless that's done, McConnell says, the problem will go on unabated.

The five-term senator delved into immigration policy during a speech to county officials from across Kentucky.

McConnell criticized President Barack Obama's request for $3.7 billion in emergency funding for the border crisis.

The senator says the request signals that Obama's administration expects the young immigrants to remain in U.S. care for a long time.

McConnell touted his Senate seniority to the politically influential group. The incumbent is facing a tough challenge from Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes in the November election.
