KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Knox County woman discovered a drunk man in her closet early Wednesday morning.

"Fifteen minutes we stood here and talked. Then I turned and saw the clothes on the floor," said Tonya Palmer, describing her seemingly usual night at home with her family.

Palmer says she thought maybe her kids or her cats had knocked down the clothes .

"I went to pick up some of the clothes and they were warm, so that kind of startled me and I bent over and I could hear breathing," she said.

Knowing something was not right at that point, she went to wake up her husband.

"I said there's something in the closet and it's breathing and it's big," said Palmer.

Thinking it was an animal, Palmer says when they moved the clothes and saw a person underneath them they could not believe it.

"I knew that something was wrong so I didn't want to get too close, but I didn't know that I was within a foot of his face," she said.

That face was Andrew Davison, 18, a stranger to the Palmers, whom they say shut himself in the closet and passed out drunk

Palmer's husband got his gun and stood at the closet door blocking him in while she got her daughters out of the house and called police.

Palmer says the strangest part is wondering how he could have gotten inside.

"There's no way to that closet without passing in front of me sitting on the couch," she said, also noting any other routes to the closet would have taken him past her daughters or her husband.

She says they were told one of their neighbors had just reported davison passed out on their porch about 45 minutes before he was found in the Palmer's house.

"I know that every time I open a closet door there's going to be that instant of is it okay to open the closet door," she said.

Palmer says Davison did not know who he was or where he was when police woke him up.

They say he told them he had consumed a fifth of vodka earlier in the evening.

Davison is charged with aggravated criminal trespassing and underage consumption.
