THP enforcing new holiday checkpoints

Posted:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

The Tennessee Highway Patrol began a multi-faceted enforcement campaign for the Independence Day holiday period early Thursday morning.

The campaign which continues till July 6 will see state troopers checking both drivers and passengers for their driver’s licenses, seat belts and sobriety.

Bedford and Rutherford Counties which have seen an increase in drunk drivers are designated “No Refusal” areas, which permit officials to seek warrants for blood samples in cases involving suspected impaired drivers.

Last year, 132 individuals across Tennessee were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, and 19 people were killed in 15 fatal crashes during the same holiday period.

Checkpoints are located all across Middle Tennessee on many major roadways.
