SUMMERTOWN, Tenn. -

A 14-year-old boy who was riding his bike late Wednesday afternoon was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville after he was struck by a car.

According to Sgt. Bill Miller the teen, identified as John Stancile, was coming down a hill on Commodore Circle Road, approaching Buffalo Road just before 4 p.m., where he failed to stop at a posted stop sign.

The 33-year-old driver of the car who struck Stancile, said she swerved in an effort to avoid hitting him.

The teenager also swerved to avoid hitting the car, but collided into the right fender of the Nissan Altima.

Stancile was not wearing a helmet at the time and the preliminary investigation indicates his bike did not have brakes.

At last check, he was listed in stable condition.
