ARLINGTON, Va. - The U.S. Navy made history on Tuesday when the first female four-star admiral was ranked.

Admiral Michelle Howard has been in the Navy’s forces for 32 of the Navy’s 236-year history, and has achieved many firsts besides Tuesday’s fourth star pinning.

Howard, 54, was also one of the first women to attend the Naval Academy and the first African American woman to command a ship.

One other woman in the Army and another in the Air Force have also received the high four-star ranking.

Navy secretary Ray Mabus said, “There is no news here today. The Navy picked the best officer.”

Howard will serve as the vice chief of naval operations, which makes her the number two admiral in the Navy.
