NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

As the Nashville Predators selected Kevin Fiala in the first round of the NHL Draft Friday, former head coach Barry Trotz prepared to take the stage with his new team, the Washington Capitals.

The Predators had the 11th overall pick. Washington was just two picks later with the 13th.

Trotz spent 17 years with the Predators but was let go by the organization in April. The Washington Capitals hired him to be their new coach on May 26.

As the draft continued in Philadelphia on Saturday, Trotz reflected on his time in Nashville and what the weekend meant for him moving forward.

“I had 17 great years in Nashville and great memories,” he told E.J. Hradek of the NHL Network. “When I went up on stage with Washington yesterday, it was strange to me but it was also closure in some ways because that is when you said ‘hey I’m not your friend, I am more of your enemy now.”

Trotz went onto to say he’s excited for the challenge that comes with starting a new job.

“It sort of revitalizes you as coach.  It’s a really exciting time for me personally.”

Trotz will return to Nashville when the Capitals face the Predators at Bridgestone Arena on January 16.
