LAKE CITY (WATE) - After months of planning and legal setbacks, Lake City officially changed its name to Rocky Top on Thursday night.
The House of Bryant, which owns the copyrights to the "Rocky Top" song, says this will hurt their famous brand, but minutes before the vote, a federal judge denied their injunction seeking to stop the city from having the vote. Previous story: Lake City one step away from changing name to Rocky Top
House of Bryant is suing Lake City and a group of developers who plan to build a large tourist attraction in the town. The lawsuit says the town and developers are illegally trying to cash in on the brand's popularity. But after city leaders made the final vote Thursday night, many residents cheered and say they welcome the change because it will likely mean more jobs and money for the struggling town.
"The chances of becoming Rocky Top and seeing this happen and the prosperity that it will bring to our town, it was a thrill. We have a lot of high hopes for our town and we have a lot of pride for our town," said resident Johnny Sharp.
"Jobs and revenue, something for our youth to be able to do, I'm just excited. Like (Sharp) said, we're a winner either way. With the promises of what's coming, I believe we're going to win," said resident Brian Brown.
