NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Big changes are on the way for the site of the historic Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville.

The major expansion project at the history property was announced Thursday morning.

The project, only concerning the non-historic portion of the building, will include a reconfigured lobby, a special events area, additional restroom accessibility, a cafe area and a larger retail space, among other improvements.

Opinions of country greats such as Vince Gill, Marty Stewart and Ricky Skaggs were sought as to how best how expand the facility.

During Thursday’s announcement it was emphasized the Ryman Auditorium itself will not be altered.

The goal, officials said, is to ultimately make access for tourists to the entire building much easier.

The Ryman will keep a full entertainment schedule as construction begins in the near future.

The expansion is expected to cost around $14 million. The project could be complete for the 2015 CMA Music Fest.

Ryman Hospitality Properties includes four Gaylord Resort Hotels, the General Jackson showboat, the Wildhorse Saloon, the Grand Ole Opry, WSM Radio and of course, the Ryman Auditorium.
