OMAHA, Neb. -

The Vanderbilt Commodores scored nine times in the third inning and held on to beat Virginia 9-8 Monday night in Omaha in game one of the College World Series Championship.

Virginia struck first scoring two runs in the first against Vanderbilt starter Walker Buehler, but things quickly fell apart for the Cavaliers.

Their star pitcher Nathan Kirby struggled with his control giving up eight runs on only two hits.

The Dores loaded the bases in the third against Kirby and scored their first five runs on an infield single, three walks and a fielding error. The only big hit of the inning came from Tyler Campbell who drive in three runs with a bases loaded double to make it a 9-2 Vanderbilt lead.

Virginia answered back with three runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fifth to make it a 9-7 game.

The Vanderbilt bullpen settled down, but the Cavaliers added another run in the eighth and looked like they were going to tie it when Vanderbilt shortstop Vince Conde came up with a huge play for the final out of the inning.

Jared Miller got the win for the Commodores after giving up two runs in two innings of relief.

Game two of the championship series is Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Omaha.

Vanderbilt will win its first baseball National Championship if they beat the Cavaliers.

If Virginia wins they play a decisive third game Wednesday night.
