NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Two brothers helped police arrest a man following a violent attack Sunday night at a high-rise condominium building in Nashville.

Police said Dean Gooding followed a woman into the Rhythm at Music Row on Demonbreun Street as she went to visit a friend around 9:40 p.m.

According to police, Gooding, 27, of Pleasant View, had gotten separated from his fiancé while drinking at a nearby bar.

The victim told News 2 he followed her onto the elevator but it appeared as though he lived in the building.

After getting off the elevator on the 11th floor, Gooding picked up a cardboard box and began hitting the victim in the head.

He also punched her in the face and slammed her head into the walls and floor, according to the arrest affidavit.

A resident who heard the commotion and stepped into the hallway was able to push Gooding off the victim and pull her into her condo.

Neighbor Peyton Snodgrass lives on the 11th floor and also heard the assault.

"I was just hanging out in my apartment with my girlfriend and I heard a woman screaming in the hallway," said Snodgrass.

Snodgrass and his brother, who also lives in the complex, tracked Gooding to the 15th floor where a struggle ensued.

According to Metro police Capt. Kenneth Walburn, the brothers opened fired on Gooding after he lunged at them. Gooding, however, was not hit.

The brothers were eventually able to get Gooding down to the lobby where they held him until police arrived.

The victim was taken to a hospital where she was treated for her injuries.

Gooding was charged with two counts of assault and one count each of aggravated assault and vandalism for pulling a fire alarm in the building, setting off sprinklers.

His fiancé told News 2 he is a decorated war veteran who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

She said Gooding is a good man and his violent behavior Sunday was the result of flashback. She told News 2 he is devastated by what happened.

"I hope he gets better. I hope he gets help," remarked Snodgrass.

Gooding was booked into the Metro jail on $20,000 bond and has since been released.

The Snodgrass brothers will not be facing any charges.

Maintenance crews were called to the building to clean up the mess from the sprinklers. Most of the damage was contained to the 15th floor.
