KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Parents and people in a South Knoxville community are reacting to the arrest of a daycare worker. Investigators arrested 23-year-old Tina Atchley after a grand jury indicted her for child abuse Friday afternoon.
Atchley was working for Cozy Kids daycare on Maryville Pike.
Parents who picked up their children from Cozy Kids learned that authorities arrested one of its workers. Brooke Givens says she received a memo Friday afternoon from the daycare's management when she picked up her daughter
"I was really shocked. This is not something that I would have ever expected from this daycare. It's not characteristic of the teachers," said Givens, a parent.
Knox County Sheriff's deputies say 23-year-old Tina Atchley is charged with child abuse after they say she slapped an 8 month old boy off a counter on June 6th. Children's Hospital treated him for several injuries after investigators say he landed on his head.
"It's concerning. You know if it were my son, I'm sure I would be upset about it, however, things happen and bad people are everywhere," said Wayne Serpas, another parent.
Lakewind Church across the street houses the children and the daycare's workers during emergency situations. The church's pastor says he considers the recent incident unusual.
"They sure do take care of their kids very well. I know what i've seen over here, they're over the top protective of those children," said Mike Sexton, pastor at Lakewind Church.
6 News talked with parents who say the arrest isn't going to change their opinion of the daycare.
"I have utmost confidence in the ownership and the people that are directly taking care of my son, so absolutely not," said Serpas.
"You can't be responsible for every person's actions and they did everything they could. This is completely uncharacteristic of anything that's happened before," said Givens. Atchley is in the Knox County jail where she is being held on a $30,000 bond.
Cozy Kids daycare management issued a statement to 6 News saying "We self reported this incident and terminated her immediately. Law enforcement has had our cooperation from the beginning. We cannot give further statement at this time because we do not want to hinder the investigation."
