Murfreesboro family finds tortured, deceased cat in mailbox

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - A Murfreesboro family woke up to find a disturbing sight Thursday morning.

Police said a cat was found tortured to death and stuffed in the family's mailbox in the 2400 block of Jones Boulevard

Investigators suspect the cruel act occurred sometime between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

Aimee Ashburn is a relative of the heart-broken family and lives directly across the street from them.

She described the scene as gruesome and senseless. She said the lid of the mailbox was open and the flag was raised while lifeless cat just laid there.

"It's scary to think of what kind of a person would do this," said Ashburn.

Ashburn told News 2 she does not believe her sister's family was targeted, but just the unfortunate victims of a cruel random act.

"I just think it was pranks from high school or middle school kids," said Ashburn.

Ashburn, who has lived in the same home for 15-years, said the neighborhood is animal friendly.

She and other neighbors who have pets also take care of the stray cats in the area.

She believes the tortured cat was a stray.

Police said there are no known suspects.
