PETALUMA, Calif. -

Dozens of dogs will compete for the “World’s Ugliest” title in an upcoming competition in California Friday.

The 26th annual event “celebrates homely hounds and the humans who love them,” according to the competition’s Web site.

Prior to the contest, each canine owner must provide documentation from a veterinarian stating their pooch is healthy and naturally ugly.

According to the competition’s Web site, many of the participants have been rescued from shelters and puppy mills.
