DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, SC, June 03, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Catherine Cornelia Sant is the kind of person who doesn't think twice about giving a helping hand to people who need it. Whenever there is a natural disaster in the world and video images of those who have been affected by it start streaming in, Catherine Cornelia Sant is one of the first people who tries to do something about it.
By 2011 Catherine Cornelia Sant
had already been associated with the Shelterbox charity, an international relief agency that responds immediately in the aftermath of natural and other disasters. Shelterbox delivers humanitarian aid, in the form of equipment and materials, to those who have been made homeless by a natural disaster, and need help the most. Catherine Cornelia Sant served as a Shelterbox USA Ambassador starting in 2008.
"We instantly respond to earthquake, volcano, flood, hurricane, cyclone, tsunami or conflict by delivering boxes of aid," Shelterbox says in its Mission Statement. "Each box supplies an extended family with a tent and life-saving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless." But Shelterbox could not provide the much-needed services it provides without the help of volunteers like Catherine Cornelia Sant. Catherine Cornelia Sant
was instrumental in raising both awareness and funds for Shelterbox in 2011. Her efforts were recognized by President Barack Obama with the President's Volunteer Service Award. This award is made in recognition of individuals of all ages who contribute a significant amount of time to volunteer activities. It is part of a national recognition program created in 2003 through the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.
"It is because of the continuous efforts of our volunteers such as [Catherine Cornelia Sant] that we are able to help so many vulnerable families each year," said Shelterbox USA President Emily Sperling. "I am truly proud to honor our volunteers," she added, "who work hard year-round to support ShelterBox and our efforts to help families rebuild their lives across the globe."
Catherine Cornelia Sant
accepted the President's Volunteer Service Award and is proud to have it. Yet she tends to downplay any special attention, and describes herself as a "polished debutante type." But Catherine Cornelia Sant is clearly much more than that. She is the mother of three children, and says she has been a swimming parent for fourteen years. Catherine Cornelia Sant is a former Meet Director for the Clayton Shaw Park Swim Team Summer Invitational, a three day swim meet in the Saint Louis, Missouri area. The event is a tradition in Saint Louis swimming. More than a thousand entrants took part in the CSP Invitational the year Catherine Cornelia Sant was at its director. In addition to all those swimmers, Catherine Cornelia Sant oversaw a staff of eighty-five officials, and is proud to think back on her involvement and say, "We made money!" Today, Catherine Cornelia Sant is a resident of Daufuskie Island, one of a chain of sea islands that run along the Atlantic Coast in the Southeast United States. There are only about two hundred and fifty people who live on Daufuskie Island year-round.
