Cumberland baseball celebrates national championship win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Cumberland University baseball team returned to Nashville Monday to a welcome home celebration after winning the National Championship Friday in the Avista NAIA World Series in Idaho.

The weekend win marks the third national championship title for the Bulldogs in the last 10 years.

“It’s something you can’t describe. I couldn’t put it into words for you. It’s something that very few people get to experience and I was very fortunate,” player Sam Lind told News 2.

Coach Woody Hunt added that the recent victory was extra sweet because it came during a season of adversities. The team is the only No. 10 seed to ever win the title since seeding was established in 2003.

"Last Friday we accomplished a dream we didn't know we could.  We believe in the dream, but a situation we had to overcome so many adversities and so many things throughout the whole year.  This team will be remembered for their resilience and their fighting spirit and never giving up,” Hunt said.

The team celebrated their victory with a picnic on the home field Monday.

Eight players were also named national NAIA scholar athletes.
