A man was critically injured in a motorcycle crash late Sunday night on Interstate 24 East in north Nashville, just north of the Briley Parkway exit.
According to police, for unknown reasons the motorcyclist left the roadway just before 9:30 p.m. and hit a guardrail. The bike came to a rest in a grassy area of the median.
The rider is a 24-year old man, but his name has not been released.
At some point after striking the guardrail he either fell or was thrown, police say.
A helmet was discovered in a ditch on the right side of the roadway.
One lane of the interstate was closed for about six hours while police investigated the crash.
Police said there was no evidence of alcohol on the scene of the crash, but the preliminary contributing factor of the crash was failure to maintain lane of travel.
The rider was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he is being treated for very serious, life-threatening injuries.
