New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie makes stops in Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie headlined the Tennessee Republican Party's annual fundraiser in Nashville on Friday evening.

But that wasn't Christie's only stop in Tennessee. He started out the day at a Republican Governors Association event in Memphis, followed by a joint appearance with U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander.

Alexander is opening his re-election campaign's West Tennessee office in the Memphis suburb of Germantown.

Christie then headed to Nashville, where he visited a barbeque restaurant with Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam.

News 2’s Chris Bundgaard spoke with the New Jersey governor at a meet and greet Friday afternoon. When asked about a possible presidential run he had no comment.

He also stated he was not concerned about critics who say he is not conservative enough.

“I don’t worry about those things. I think people judge you by who you are what you’ve done, and there will be plenty of time, if I decide to do anything else, for people to make those judgments. My job is to make sure the Republican governors get all the support they need to get re-elected,” Christie explained.

Gov. Christie later headlined the TNGOP Statesmen's Dinner at the Music City Center.

He spoke of working with democrats in his home state instead of working against them.

"I don't know when compromise became capitulation. But that's what people in Washington seem to think. I don't know when it became wrong to talk to the people on the other side, to respect them and to become their friends."

The event was attended by 1,700 people and raised more than $700,000 for the Tennessee Republican Party.

Christie is fighting to recover from a traffic scandal in New Jersey that has deflated enthusiasm for a potential presidential bid in 2016, maintaining an aggressive national travel schedule and posting strong fundraising totals.
