MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. -

A 69-year-old Miata enthusiast was killed and his wife injured in a serious rollover crash in Maury County Saturday night.

The accident happened at 8 p.m. Saturday night in the 4400 block of McClanahan Road in the Hampshire Community.

Authorities stated Gray Sands Jr., of Franklin, Tenn., was driving a 1999 Mazda Miata when he lost control going around a curve in the road.

The car then travelled off the roadway and rolled over several times for 70 or 80 yards down a steep embankment. It landed upside down against a tree.

Sands Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene.

His 67-year-old wife, Candace Sands, was injured and airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Her condition was not immediately known.

Officials reported speed was a factor in the crash.

Sands Jr. was the Events Director for the Music City Miata Club, which is a car club for those who love Miatas.

The Communications Director told News 2 he was sorry to hear of Sands’ loss and he will greatly missed.
