CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -

A Clarksville father has been charged with child abuse and neglect after police said he left his 18-month-old in an unlocked car.

According to the Leaf Chronicle, someone checking parking permits at an apartment complex found the child around 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

The child was reportedly asleep in his car seat and the car doors were unlocked.

The person who contacted police stood by the vehicle until authorities arrived.

When officials were on the scene, 23-year-old Dearius Oliver approached them, stating that the car and the child were his.

Oliver said he was with a friend and was trying to find a place to sleep for the night. He also stated that he was only gone ten minutes.

However, the person who called police said he stood by the car for 15 minutes.

Oliver’s friend reportedly told officers that Oliver was in her apartment for 45 minutes to an hour.

He was then arrested and booked into the Montgomery County Jail on $10,000 bond.
