Metro to offer nutritious summer meals to children in need

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

For children who rely on school meals for their primary nutrition, summer can be a time of uncertainty about when they will have access to healthy food.

This summer, several locations will offer free meals to children in the community.

During the first week in June, 110 sites throughout Nashville will offer free breakfast and lunch to school-aged children.

It’s part of the Metro Action Commission’s Summer Food Services for Children.

When school is out, the commission will serve about 5,000 meals per week.

“It's really assuring for parents to know there are places such as a summer food service site that's local and close to their child where they can go and get a nutritious meal in a safe environment,” said Lisa McCrady, the public information representative for the Metro Action Commission.

The children enjoy a family-style meal and while eating, they are taught nutrition and manners.

“We want them to understand that when they leave Head Start, how to conduct themselves when they're eating. Not talking with food in their mouth, engaging in appropriate conversations at the meal table while learning,” said Corita Edwards, a center manager.
